“Reiki – a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional wellbeing”

– Oxford English Dictionary

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is a simple, non-invasive healing system, which powerfully promotes wholeness and health for the mind and body.

It is based on the principle that there is a powerful ‘life force energy’ that flows through us all and which causes us to be alive.

If our life force energy is low or depleted, the possibility of getting sick is higher, and we are more likely to experience feelings of stress. If our life force energy is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. It has been used as a healing system in the UK since the late 1900s, but Eastern medicine has worked with this energy for thousands of years, recognising its flow through all living things.

Reiki can be used to support orthodox medicine, or can be used alone. It does not replace traditional medication or treatments.

Reiki treats the whole person, and when you have a treatment you feel as though you are experiencing a wonderful glowing radiance, through and around you. Reiki treats body, mind, emotions and spirit, and creates many beneficial effects that include relaxation, and feelings of peace and wellbeing.

The ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to a student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an ‘attunement’ given by a Reiki master, and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of ‘life force energy’ to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life.

Whilst Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion and has no dogma associated with it. There is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use reiki. In fact reiki is not dependent on belief at all and it will work whether you believe in it or not.

Scientific research using quantum physics is starting to help us understand how Reiki may work to benefit the individual. In the future, it has been suggested it may become known as energy medicine, based on scientifically measurable energy emitted from the healer’s hands.
